What are Some Famous Mermaid Stories?

Mermaids are a popular subject in folklore and there are hundreds of myths and stories about mermaids. Today we are going to learn some famous mermaid stories.

The Little Mermaid
The most popular and well-known story is The Little Mermaid. A young mermaid, Ariel, saves a young prince, Prince Eric, from dying. In the process of saving the prince, she falls in love with him. Ariel wants to be with Prince Eric so Ariel makes a deal with Ursula to give her legs so she can go on land to be closer to Prince Eric. Ursula requires Ariel to give her voice in exchange for legs. Ariel spends 3 days on land trying to have Prince Eric fall in love with her. If Ariel doesn’t receive true loves kiss within 3 days, Ursula gains the soul of Ariel. Ariel, her father King Trinton, and Prince Eric defeat Ursula to save Ariel’s soul. Ariel and Prince Eric get married and live happily ever after.

Merrow (Irish Folklore)
Another popular story about mermaids is found in the Irish folklore about Merrows. Merrows are mermaids with green hair that have enchanting voices and a magical cap that allows them to survive on land. There are stories of Merrows falling in love with and marrying humans. Is the person you met today really a Merrow with a magical cap to appear as a human?

Ceasg (Scottish Folklore)
The Ceasg is a creature from Scottish folklore that lives in both saltwater and freshwater. Like mermaids, they appear as a beautiful woman with the tail of a fish. The special thing about a Ceasg is that if you capture her, she will grant you three wishes.
